Rama Navami: 10 lessons to learn from Ramayana

Ramayana is one of the greatest epics of Hindu Mythology. Ramayana is indeed an ancient epic that is alive even today. The book is a richly layered one, with well-etched personalities, and the breathless victory of good over evil.

Today we will talk about the great book, Ramayana. You all know the story of Ramayana very well that Lord Rama is born in Ayodhya, married to Sita Ji, sent to exile for 14 years, Ravana abducted Sita Ji etc.

On the auspicious occasion of Navratri and Ram Navami, through this article, we will know about 10 lessons related to Ramayana, which we must learn from it.

Karma is everything:

He was larger than life. He had 20 hands and 10 heads and was blessed with amazing supernatural powers. Ravana was an eminent Pandit. He was the grandson of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. He was the younger brother of Kuber, the god of wealth. He lived in Lanka, made of gold. He is also believed to have been a devout follower of Lord Shiva and a great scholar.

Ravana had all these qualities yet he is considered the evilest character of Ramayana. On the other hand, there are so many characters in Ramayana, like Jatayu, Jamvant, Sugriv, and Angad, who are not as powerful as Ravana but considered heroes due to their karmas.

Ramayana teaches us that your power, clan, education and wealth don’t make you a hero or villain; it’s your deeds that take you up or bring you down. Even though one is well endowed with good qualities, single frailty in character is enough to drag you down.

( Though Ravana was a bad guy. he is considered as one of the best scholar of his time. We can learn some lessons from the life of Ravana too here: Improve Your Health- Few lessons from the Life of Ravana )

Company matters

Kaikeyi, the second wife of Lord Rama’s father Dashrath, adored Lord Rama very much. It is said that Lord Rama was her favourite son. Even Lord Rama was more attached to kaikeyi compared to his mother Kaushalya.

kaikeyi was the master of many qualities. She was rich in beauty as well war skills, a favourite of her husband amongst all wives. Though she was a kind and generous woman at heart, she is remembered as a disgraced character of Ramayana, because her companion Manthra encourages Kaikeyi to behave jealously and blackmail Dashrath into crowning Bharat as king instead of Rama. There is no malice in the heart of kaikeyi either till the time she gave into the words of Manthara.

This lesson of Ramayana teaches us the importance of the good company. Kaikeyi was not bad at heart and loved Ram very much but she became a disgraced character as her company Manthra was a crooked woman. So surround yourself with positive people because they will motivate you and fill you with positivity. We should live in good company so that negativity does not dominate us.

Show your power- Don't let anyone take advantage of you

When Lord Rama wanted to enter Lanka to save Sitaji, he prayed to the sea for three days to ask for a way to go from the sea to Lanka, but the sea did not listen. Then Lord Ram got angry and wanted to curse the sea. Then the sea apologized to him and told him the way to cross the sea.

This incident shows that when people take you for granted, don’t let them do so. Don’t be rude, be kind but firm.

Don’t doubt your strength

Hanuman was the avatar of Lord Shiva. Lord Brahma had blessed him with many boons. But he forgot his powers because of the curse of the sages but whenever anyone would remind Hanuman of his vigour, his power will come back. Jambvant, knowing of this curse, took responsibility for reminding him of his powers. This made Hanuman get his power again and he could perform all the heroic deeds like lifting a mountain, making a leap over the sea and putting Lanka on fire.

It teaches us that we just need to realize our strength or we need someone (Mentor) who can bring out our extraordinary potential and helps us in doing wonders just like the way Lord Hanuman did.

Never think anyone inferior

Lord Rama was a mighty prince. He was the avatar of Lord Vishnu. Yet He took the help of ‘Vanar Sena’ to build a bridge (Rama Setu) so he could reach Lanka to free his wife Sitaji. The little monkeys not just helped him build the setu but also took part in the war against Ravana. Even a squirrel is said to scurry to the construction with whatever amount of dust she could muster on her back.

Control your temptations

Sitaji was attracted to a golden deer that looked incredibly beautiful and wanted lord Rama to get the deer for her from the jungle, indeed it was a trap that made her suffer. Lord Rama went after it and disaster struck soon after.

The lesson here is to not run after sudden allurements, to value what you have instead of leaping into the unknown.

( In my this article 10 Healthy habits which are not healthy we have discussed about some such habits which tempt us as if they are good habits but they are not.)

Don’t share your secrets with anyone

The biggest weakness of humans is that they easily tell the biggest secret of their life to others which becomes fatal for them in future. Ravana’s biggest mistake that he made was that Vibhishan knew the secret of his death.

By revealing your secrets you are giving someone else the power to control you. Keep your secrets to yourself, do not tell anyone until or unless the matter is very serious and has to share with someone to solve the problem.

Listen to your good wishers

When Ravana kidnapped Sitaji and took her to Lanka, then his brother Vibhishana, his wife Mandodari, even KumbhKaran asked him to send Mata Sita back with respect and apologize to Lord Rama, but Ravana was so proud of his arrogance that he did not listen to them and everyone knows what happened then.

We find many people in our lives who keep praising us and speak pleasing words to get favours from us. But it is very difficult to get people, who will show you the right path. If you find people like that never leave them. They are the real well-wishers so listen to them.

Be a fighter in adverse times

When Ravana kidnapped Sitaji, she could have easily given up on life and surrendered to her circumstances. But she didn’t. She had the courage and determination to face Ravan with a smile and held her own in difficult times. She was indeed a fighter and one that maintained her calm in times of crisis. In today’s time and age, this is how we want our daughters to be.

Be patient and serious

In Ramayana, Lord Rama, Mata Sita and Lakshman Ji all three spent time with restraint even in adverse circumstances for fourteen years. There is a lesson to be learned from the Ramayana that one should exercise restraint in every situation. The person who maintains restraint and patience in happiness and sorrow can achieve his goal by fighting against odd situations.

Ramayana is very sacred to the Hindu religion and in it, not only life but lessons are learned about different stages of life.
