Holika Dahan


Holi is also connected as the symbol of the victory of good over evil. One day before Holi, people conduct a ritual called ‘Holika Dahan’,
a bonfire the night before the day of Dulhendi.  The festival of Holi takes place in a season when many types of bacteria are growing rapidly in the environment. There is a tradition of walking around the bonfire in Holika Dahan. Experts believe that by doing this and burning Holika everywhere, the bacteria present in the body along with the environment die. It gives us protection from many diseases. The heat from the bonfire cleanses the body after killing the bacteria.

In the southern regions of India, people put the remaining ash ( Vibhuti ) of the Holika Dahan, on their forehead and mix it Chandan and young leaves and flowers of the mango tree and consume it to promote good health.

Holi is known for its cold and soft drinks. Famous Holi drinks like thandai and kanji not only cool the body and mind but are also considered to be an excellent source of antioxidants. Almonds, milk, melon seeds, fennel seeds and rose petals are used in the delicious thandai. All these substances are rich in nutrients and fibre.

Holi is the time to gorge on mouth-watering delicacies. Like any Indian festival, Holi also comes loaded with its signature delicacies like Gujiya, Malpua, Dahi Bhalla, Namak Pare, mathri and so on. These activities keep us fresh and active, which in general keeps the body and mind healthy. Also when your body is tired, a good sleep after all the activity makes you ready for the next morning.
